Automation system designers are constantly looking for ways to save board space, increase channel density, and improve the accuracy of voltage and current input monitoring, allowing operators to monitor systems more granularly and reducing system downtime. Compared with a standard linear optocoupler isolation scheme consisting of discrete components, the MAX22530 provides a 50-fold improvement in monitoring measurement accuracy (from +/- 50% to just +/- 1%). The device uses Maxim’s unique integrated isolation technology, which combines a 12-bit ADC, DC-DC converter, user-adjustable threshold detection levels, and chip-level diagnostics. This combination increases the stability of the current transfer ratio by a factor of 50, resulting in an ultra-stable current-sense resistor voltage.
By enabling better measurement accuracy on four voltage and current inputs, the MAX22530 allows end users to make better real-time decisions, thereby improving system performance and increasing productivity. The high level of integration results in an overall solution size of only 250mm2, which is 40% smaller than the closest discrete competitor (420mm2).
The MAX22530 is the latest addition to Maxim’s MAXSafe offering. MAXSafe products combine highly integrated isolated, micropower DC-DC converters and communication lines for powering field-side circuits that are isolated from control-side power supplies, while simplifying troubleshooting for signal monitoring applications.
